I’m Abel Tadesse Meja, the founder of Penguin Imports and Xports. My journey started as a chef in Arizona, and it led me back to my roots in Ethiopia with a mission to support farmers through fairness, respect, and long-term partnership. Thank you for being here.
Several years ago, while running my own café in Tempe, Arizona, I had the opportunity to work closely with local farmers who supplied us with fresh fruits and vegetables. Since our menu was mostly plant-based and seasonal, we relied on quality produce and strong relationships with growers.
Watching farmers produce such high-quality food in a place like Arizona—where the climate is extremely dry—truly inspired me. It reminded me how much dedication, skill, and patience farming requires, no matter where in the world it is done.
Because I was born in Ethiopia, I always carried a dream in my heart: to one day work with Ethiopian farmers and support them in a meaningful and respectful way. Not only because of my personal connection, but because I believe that small-scale farmers deserve stronger opportunities and fair access to global markets.
As the world continues to face poverty and inequality, it is important to recognize the role these hardworking farmers play. Many are often overlooked, yet they work tirelessly to provide for their families and communities, and their effort contributes greatly to food security and local development.
Our Mission
At Penguin Imports and Xports, our mission is simple:
– To support farmers through fair pricing
– To provide consistent work opportunities
– To build long-term partnerships based on trust and respect
Our hope is that by doing this, farmers can create stronger futures for their families, contribute to their villages, and continue doing the important work they do every day.
We truly welcome your comments and suggestions, because we believe there is always room to improve and grow. Thank you again for visiting, and I wish you a pleasant browsing experience on our website.

Biography
As the world continues to grapple with poverty and inequality, it was important for me to recognize the role that small-scale farmers in Ethiopia play in making a difference. These farmers are often overlooked as they work hard to provide food for their families and communities, but their efforts have an immense impact on global food security. My mission became to be able to help these farmers by giving them consistent work and fair prices for their products, thus allowing them to help their families and contribute to their communities and villages.
